On Monday, the Mixed 1 team conceded their final match against Huncote Mixed 1, preventing the opportunity to finish a disappointing season on a high.
The match was essentially a dead rubber as the Mixed 1 team were already relegated, following a loss to Huncote in the away fixture. However, the team were aiming to finish the season on a positive note and win the final match. Unfortunately, a number of ladies had to drop out of the fixture, leaving Jed no choice but to concede the match. This result leaves Mixed 1 with an unenviable record of 0 wins and 8 losses. Commiserations to Jed and his Mixed 1 team, hopefully they can bounce back next season and win promotion. On Monday, the Mixed 2 team won 6-3 against Longslade Stoneygate Mixed 4, edging closer to promotion with two matches left to play.
This result extends the team's unbeaten run to six wins from six and means they only need to win one of their remaining two matches to secure promotion. The team was composed of Ayesha & Henri, Caroline & Raheel and Carole & David. All of the pairs won two rubbers each, with Ayesha & Henri losing their first rubber of the season. Henri, the team captain, said in his defence, "I would put this down to being jet lagged, flying back from the US on the same day (landing at Heathrow at 4pm for a match starting at 7pm). I could not focus properly on important points." Henri went on to say, "Great team effort and result for Mixed 2 and, with only two matches left to play, we can seriously consider winning division 4." The next match is against South Leicestershire Mixed 4 on Friday 26th February. On Thursday, the Mixed 2 team won 7-2 against Longslade Stoneygate Mixed 4, making it five wins from five.
Ayesha & Henri were the star performers, winning all three rubbers. Both Susannah & Raheel and Samira & Steve won two rubbers each. The team started well, winning the first round of rubbers 2-1, with Samira & Steve losing narrowly to Longslade Stoneygate's third pair. Mixed 2 won the second round 3-0; all pairs won convincingly and the crucial fifth rubber was achieved to secure the victory with rubbers to spare. The final round was won 2-1, with Susannah & Raheel losing out. It was reported that this was down to Raheel getting a bit tired as it was past his bedtime. Henri, the team captain, said, "It's a great result and I'm a proud captain. We're at the top of division 4 with five wins out of five. Well done, team." Having now played and beaten the opposition in the division at least once, the Mixed 2 team is looking odds on to win promotion. The next match is the return fixture against Longslade Stoneygate Mixed 4 on Monday 8th February. On Saturday night (yes, you read that correctly), the Mixed 1 team lost 2-7 to South Leicestershire Mixed 4.
This was the Mixed 1 team’s sixth different line-up out of the six games played so far, highlighting the team’s unfortunate lack of stability. Both Kate & Jed and Jing & Lee won a rubber each against South Leicestershire’s second pair. Claire & David were unable to win a rubber, but not through lack of effort. South Leicestershire’s experience at this level gave them the edge at crucial moments. This leaves the last two matches of the season against Huncote Mixed 1, the first being the away fixture on 10th January. Can the Mixed 1 team save their season? Watch this space. The Mixed 1 team endured another demoralising loss last night, losing 0-9 to Longslade Stoneygate Mixed 4.
This loss probably leaves Mixed 1 at the bottom of division 4, with no wins in the five matches played so far. Thanks to the pairings of Kate & Jed, Anna & Joel and Caroline & Lee for their efforts. The next match is against South Leicestershire Mixed 4 on Saturday 12th December. The Mixed 2 team won 7-2 against Huncote Mixed 1 last night, making that three wins out of three in division 4.
After an early lead, winning the first round of rubbers 3-0, Huncote struck back and won the second round 2-1. However, the Mixed 2 team stood strong and won the final round 3-0, completing a 7-2 victory. Ayehsa & Henri won all three rubbers, with Caroline & Raheel winning two rubbers along with Susannah & David. Henri, the team captain, said, "This is an important win since Croakers doesn't have a good track record against clubs that play with plastic shuttles. Well done, team." The next match is against South Leicestershire Mixed 4 on Monday 11th January. On Monday, the Mixed 1 team lost 1-8 against South Leicestershire Mixed 4.
The Mixed 1 team have now lost four matches in a row and are finding it hard going in division 4. Kate & Jed were the only pair to win a rubber, with both Jing & Lee and Anna & David finishing empty handed. The next match is against Longslade Stoneygate Mixed 4 on Monday 23rd November. Croakers’ Mixed 1 team lost 2-7 against Longslade Stoneygate Mixed 4 last night and are still searching for their first win in division 4.
After losing the first two matches of the season to Croakers’ own Mixed 2 team, the Mixed 1 team were hoping to kick-start their season against Longslade Stoneygate’s Mixed 4 team. However, both Ayesha & Lee and Samira & Jed were only able to win a rubber each, although many of the games were close in the other rubbers. Anna & Alex were unable to win a rubber, but fought bravely. Mixed 1 have had an unsettled start to the season and last night was no different, with three new pairings playing together. Hopefully the team can get a stable and consistent line-up for the upcoming matches. The next match is against South Leicestershire Mixed 4 on Monday 9th November. The new season is now well underway and a number of matches have taken place over the last couple of weeks. Let's read the match reports.
